In a privileged space between the future Athletes’ Village and National Olympic Training Center (which will be erected on the former Nelson Piquet Speedway in the neighborhood of Jacarepaguá), the Rock City Olympic Park will be one of the most popular spots during the 2016 Olympic Games. Planned for a range of different uses, the space serve as the main leisure area for athletes during the competition.

With city investments of R$ 37 million, the park will be inaugurated during the 2011 Rock in Rio event and will also host the 2013 and 2015 editions of the festival. The space is being built in the neighborhood of Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in front of Riocentro, on a 250,000-m2 area.

The construction is finally meeting a long-time demand in the city, since there are currently no spaces designed for large outdoor performances. For the days of the shows, a large central stage will be set up. In the case of major events, there will be two other different areas for presentations.

The project also includes the construction of exercise device stations, a bicycle path (for sports and leisure), playground, paths for walking, decks, a marina and an outlook that will be installed at the Jacarepaguá Lake. There are also plans for more areas for vehicle parking and barbecue pits, as well as a space reserved for meetings and exhibits.

Another goal assumed by the Olympic Park is to continue with the ecological actions to recover the lagoon area of the region of Baixada de Jacarepaguá, in the city’s Western Zone. The park is included in the contract specifications and is considered an area crucial for the games, becoming yet another legacy for the city after the competition is over.
